A Valentine’s Message

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His [a]only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16, NASB)

This is the most familiar passage of Scripture to many. Having come to personal faith in the Lord Jesus on Valentine’s Day in 1984, it was one of the first verses I wanted to memorize. And throughout the years many suggestions on Bible reading for new Christians all point toward this book in the bible.

” but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is [a]the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.” (John 20:31, NASB)

John was written primarily as an evangelistic book in contrast to the other three Gospels. These are two of the key verses in this Gospel. Other important passages I find important are as follows–

1:12-14, 29, 45; 3:3, 17, 36; 4:14, 23-24, 42; 5:24; 6:27-29, 32-35, 37-40, 68-69; 7:37-38; 8:12, 31-32, 36; 9:33, 35-37; 10:7, 9-11, 14-15, 27-30; 11:24-27; 12:26, 32, 44-46; 13:34-35; 14:1-6, 12-17, 23, 26-27; 15:1-5, 11-13; 16:13-15, 33; 17:3; 20:19-22; 21:25

What can we get out of all these passages? The Bible Tells us all we need to know about Jesus, Personal faith in Jesus is the prerequisite for eternal life, The Old Testament predicted Jesus’ coming–the New Testament presents it, Jesus satisfies our deepest needs more than food and drink satisfy our hunger and thirst, God calls Christians to worship Him wholeheartedly, Sin brings us down–but Jesus lifts us up, Jesus willingly gave his life for ours, Jesus keeps us close to His side eternally, The light of Jesus leads us out of eternal darkness, Jesus calls us to a life of love and service, Jesus is preparing our eternal dwelling place even today, We should pray according to God’s will, The Holy Spirit helps us live for God–according to His precepts, The Holy Spirit helps us remember what the Bible teaches us, Jesus refines our character so that we can bear spiritual fruit, Jesus gives us peace–freeing us from fear, and The Triune God(Father, Son, Holy Spirit) works in unison to save the lost and grow the saved.
